Firmicus Maternus and the Twelve Places (Topoi )

Next, I have summarized the descriptions of the 12 “places” (topoi) by Julius Firmicus Maternus in his Matheseos from the fourth century CE. These ancient significations are often helpful in delineating the impact of an aspect. The following comments are based on my translation of the Latin version of Maternus’s Matheseos edited by Kroll and Skutsch.

Firmicus Maternus entitles this chapter “On the Rulerships of the Twelve Places” (De duodecim locorum potestatibus in Latin) and follows the original tradition of calling the 12 divisions “places” (from the Greek topoi) rather than houses. Reflecting on these fourth-century descriptions can enhance our appreciation of the root meanings of the houses.

1st Place: Life and Spirit of the Native. Often called the “Helm” of the chart, the 1st Place is the frame and substance of the entire nativity.

2nd Place: Gates of Hades, presumably inactive (piger in Latin) because it is averse (not connected by aspect) to the rising sign. It signifies increase related to the hope and possessions of the native.

3rd Place: [Moon] Goddess, which beholds the rising sign by sextile aspect. It signifies siblings, friends and travel.

4th Place: Imum Caelum, or Bottom of Heaven, which is joined to the rising sign with maximum strength by square aspect. It signifies our parents’ property, movable foundations, and any hidden or stored resources that belong to them.

5th Place: Good Fortune, which signifies the number and gender of children. It is a place associated with benefic Venus and is strongly connected to the rising sign by a trine aspect. Sometimes the degree of the Mid-heaven is found opposite to this place.

6th Place: Bad Fortune, associated with malice and the malefic planet Mars. It signifies physical defect (vitium in Latin) and illness. This place is inactive and averse to the rising sign, which it does not behold by any aspect. Sometimes the malice of the 6th Place is diminished when a planet placed in the 6th receives a fortunate aspect from one in the 10th Place.

7th Place: Descendant, an angular place, which signifies the quality and number of marriages. Because the Descendant lies directly opposite the rising degree, it is connected violently (violenta in Latin) to the Ascendant. By a violent connection, Firmicus Maternus means that a planet on the western horizon, conjunct the Descendant, has the potential to harm the native, whose body and vitality are signified by the Ascendant. A modern example is the chart of President John F. Kennedy, relocated to Dallas, Texas, where he was assassinated. If he were born in Dallas, JFK’s birth chart would have Chiron, a symbol of bodily injury, on the Descendant in an almost exact opposition to the rising degree.

8th Place: signifies the quality of death. This Place is inactive and averse to the Ascendant because it does not behold the rising sign by any aspect.

9th Place: Sun-god. It signifies sects, travels and religion. The 9th Place is powerfully and favorably connected to the rising sign by trine.

10th Place: Medium Caelum, or Middle of Heaven, is joined to the rising sign with maximum strength by square aspect.
